APEX SCIENCE
MIAMI, FLORIDA
Design and Branding for a Hands-on After School Science Curriculum.
Apex Science is a hands-on science exploration system, developed by the Frost Science Museum, designed for children in after school programs. The system introduces age-appropriate science concepts to children through inquiry based lessons, covering a broad spectrum of different scientific fields including natural, earth & space, matter, environmental, life and motion sciences. Our contributions to the creation of the Apex Science program included brand development and the design of all of the program's educational and instructional materials.
BRANDING THE PROGRAM
Our first step was to create the master branding that is used to promote, identify and represent the overall program. The Apex Science program consists of 32 individual lessons that are organized into eight different themed units including: A Bird's Eye View, You Are What You Eat, Water Works, Design and Construct It!, Up, Up and Away!, Can You Hear Me?, Let's Rock!, The Sun, Our Star. We assigned a unique color theme to each unit to help distinguish one from the other, and reflected these color themes in the program's branding and sub-branding.
DESIGNING THE PROGRAM MATERIALS
Each of the program's eight themed units includes a series of hands-on lessons designed to teach children about different scientific principles. The materials for each unit include a master binder that contains all of the training materials, lesson specific background information for activity leaders, lesson cards with detailed step-by-step instructions for activity leaders, and the expedition learning cards that children use to perform each lesson. Our contribution also included the development and creation of hundreds of illustrations that are used throughout the program materials to demonstrate the different scientific principles and illustrate the steps of each lesson's activities.
